How to configure Google Workspace in Jostle

The following settings are required for Jostle to integrate with Google Workspace.  If your IT policies preclude these settings, Jostle also offers a non-Google-integrated version. E-mail us at info@jostle.me to get started.

Prerequisites

If your organization would like to use a Google-integrated Jostle instance, you can sign up via the Google Workspace Marketplace.  There are a few settings you'll need to configure in your Administrator's panel for Workspace. via https://admin.google.com.

To enable the Google Workspace API

  1. Go to the administrator's panel for Workspace: https://admin.google.com
  2. At Security > API controls > App Access Control > Find Jostle App set Access = Trusted
  3. Go to Users > Your Name  and then scroll down to Admin Roles and Privileges
  4. Under Roles verify that your account has the right access level to install Jostle (User Management Admin or Super Admin AND Groups Admin)

If you do not have the required roles, click anywhere in the Admin Roles and Privileges box to open the selection screen and then enable the Assigned state setting for the needed Admin Roles.

5. At Users > Add new user, create a Google user account as jostle_librarian@yourdomain.com. This is the account that the Jostle API uses to manage Library on the Google side.

6. Log into Google once as this new jostle_librarian user.

Note: You should not log into this account for other purposes.

After installing Jostle to your Google Workspace account

You should verify that Jostle is now integrated with Google Workspace, by verifying these settings:

Verify that Jostle can access data in your domain

Go to Apps > Google Workspace Marketplace Apps > Jostle > Data access and make sure Data access says Granted (if not, click there to authorize access).

Verify that Jostle is turned on

  1. Go to Apps > Google Workspace Marketplace Apps > Jostle > View organizational units and groups
  2. Under App Distribution make sure it says:

Note: Jostle will not function correctly if it says OFF for everyone.

Google Workplace status

The Jostle application needs to be enabled (Status = ‘ON for everyone’ or 'ON for some') in the admin console) in your organization in order for anyone to access Jostle for setup and configuration.

When you integrate with Google Workplace all your Google users will now be Jostle users. However, they don't actually get access to Jostle until they are invited by a Jostle System Admin. Once your setup is complete, you will invite your users at large and they will be able to sign in for the first time. This article provides more details on how Users are invited and activated.

When Jostle is turned off in the Google Admin Console, any users (including admins) will be Deactivated in Jostle and will need to be re-invited before they can access Jostle. System Admins that become locked out in this manner can email support@jostle.me to regain access.
