How to control who sees and starts Discussions in Jostle

This article provides answers to some commonly asked questions about security and privacy in Discussions. Should you be looking for additional information, please feel free to contact us at support@jostle.me. Jostle's platform-level security practices are summarized here. Our Privacy Policy is here.

Who can view chats?

Information in Discussions are only visible to those invited to that Discussion. You can see who this is by checking who the Members of the Discussion are (click on the i-icon in the Action Bar).

The exception is Discoverable Discussions, which are visible to everyone in your organization.

By definition, all users can see Org-wide Discussions.

Private Discussions have a small lock icon beside the title and Org-wide Discussions have a small globe icon beside the title.

Only users in your Jostle platform can participate in Discussions. People that don't have accounts in your Jostle platform cannot be added.

What about personal/private information?

While a Discussion can be private, any Participant has the ability to export the conversation thread into a .zip file.

As is the case for any online platform, you should always consider the nature of the information you are sharing and who you are sharing it with.

Moderators of a Discussion can add and delete Members how and when they see fit.

What if I need strict governance over chats?

Many organizations have regulations due to information regulations or contractual obligations that require them to have access and visibility to all chats org-wide. To assist with such compliance requirements, we have created a number of governance features, including Mandatory Moderator. See this page for a overview of these. A System Admin should email support@jostle.me to get this set up.

Note when a Mandatory Moderator is added to a Discussion, this user is listed as a Member of that Discussion to provide transparency to all its Participants.

What if I don't want org-wide discussions?

System Admins can disable Org-wide Discussions (Discussions that automatically include everyone on your platform) at Admin Settings > Views and Functions > Manage Views and Options. Note that disabling will disappear any existing Org-wide Discussions, until they are enabled again.

Can I restrict who can create Discussions?

System Admins can enact a Discussions Allow List, such that only individuals on that list can start a new Discussion. Once created, Moderators can add/remove Members as they see fit. A System Admin should email support@jostle.me to get this set up.

Can block people from starting Discussions with lots of Members?

System Admins can set a maximum number of people that can be added as Members of a Discussion. Individuals on Allow List will still be able to create larger Discussions, when they are required. A System Admin should email support@jostle.me to get this set up.

You just paste it into a discussion post. Please email us at support@jostle.me if this is not working in your context.

    Hi Tash

Moderators of a Discussion can access the "Delete Discussion" option via the action menu (three dots icon) found in the right corner when viewing the Discussion. For more information, see the "NOTES" section under "Managing your Discussions" here.
