Introduction
Discussions provides easy to create group chats and send instant messages to anyone on your Jostle platform. It supports:
- Private direct messaging (DM's)
- Group Discussions, including evergreen chats tied to a dynamic group, such as a "Pricing Strategy" chat that is tied to the ever-changing membership of your Sales Team.
- Discoverable Discussions that everyone can see but that don't create any notifications until you Join them. These are ideal for working openly on a topic and for special interest groups such as "NHL fans".
Users can create custom Discussion Categories to help manage your Discussions and set your Preferences to specify how and when you receive Discussions notifications.
Administrators and governance
Discussions doesn't support any dedicated Administrator roles. Instead, each Discussion has its own Moderator (when you start a Discussion you are automatically made it's first Moderator).
Moderators are able to add or remove Discussion participants, add additional Moderators, and delete comments added by themselves and other participants.
Normally anyone can start a new Discussion or DM, but System Admins can be restrict this by tapping into our governance features. Email us at success@jostle.me to learn more and get these configured.
Note that unlike most chat tools, Jostle Discussions is strictly private within your Jostle community. Users can confidently share information, with no worries that someone outside the organization might be part of the chat.
Managing Discussions settings
The Discussions view supports advanced functionality that allows you to control how new Discussions are created within your organization. These settings allow you to manage targeting options and integration access directly from the view.
Permissions
You must be a System Admin to access the Discussions Settings menu.
Accessing Discussions settings
Previously, settings for Discussions were managed in Admin Settings. Now, they are located directly within the Discussions view for easier access. The action menu is now visible to all users, though the options within it depend on your specific permissions.
- Go to Discussions.
- Click the action menu icon (three dots) in the top right corner.
- Select Discussions Settings.
Note: If you are not a System Admin, the Discussions Settings option will appear disabled and a tooltip will indicate that it is only available for System Admins.
Org-wide discussions
This setting controls whether users can create Discussions that are visible to the entire organization.
- Enabled: People can create new Discussions in the Org-wide category, provided they are not restricted by the Discussion Size Limit setting.
- Disabled (Recommended): To keep things simple, we recommend leaving this off unless your specific organizational needs require it.
Note: This setting was previously located on the "Manage Views and Options" page in Admin Settings but has now been moved to this panel.
Discussion size limit
You can restrict the size of new Discussions to prevent large, noisy groups or to limit the creation of Direct Messages. This limit only applies at the time a new Discussion is created; Moderators can add additional members later as required, provided the limit is not exceeded.
No Limit (Default)
Anyone can create Discussions with an unlimited number of members.
Limited to a specific number
Select this option to enforce a cap on the number of contributors.
- Member Limit: Enter an integer to set the maximum number of members.
- Preventing Direct Messages: If you enter "1", users will be prevented from creating Direct Messages (chats with one other person). Note: If your organization has a Mandatory Moderator, you must specify at least 3 (2 users plus the moderator).
- Allowlist: People added to this list are exempt from size limits. They can create new Discussions with any number of members, including Org-wide Discussions.
Manage Integrations
If you previously used the "Discussions Settings" menu to manage API keys, this has been renamed to Manage Integrations.
This option is available in the action menu. It allows users with API access to manage third-party access and view endpoint URLs. If you do not have Discussions API access, this option will be disabled.
