As a News Editor, you have access to a wide range of metrics to help guide your work. This article provides an overview of everything available, including the parts that are also visible to users and Authors.
On an employee platform like Jostle, success is measured a little differently. It’s not about how long people stay. Our goal is to help employees find what they need, then get back to their day. The best signs the platform is working are how often people return and how much they engage with content.
There are several different ways to explore how users are engaging with content:
News Metrics Snapshot – High-level overview
News Viewer Metrics – Data for a specific News item
News Item Metrics – Data for individual News items within a date range
News Audience Metrics – Metrics for each user
News Platform Metrics – Weekly counts of some key metrics
Note: All these metrics can be exported weekly via SFTP into your Business Information System (BIS) or other systems. Email us at support@jostle.me if you need help setting this up.
News Metrics Snapshot
- Tap News in the main navigation
- Open the action menu (three-dot icon) in the top right corner
- From the dropdown menu, select View News Metrics
This displays top-level weekly data for both News and Activity. The orange benchmark lines represent customers with the highest levels of employee participation.
Note: The data being used to display these metrics can also be downloaded via the steps below.
News Viewer Metrics
News items display total views and likes to everyone. Anyone can tap the like count to see a randomized list of those who liked the item.
Individuals with edit rights (Authors and News Editors) have additional access. They can tap the like or view count to see who liked or viewed the News item. While viewing either list, they can also download it as a CSV file.
Each CSV file includes a timestamp of when the News item was viewed or liked, along with a row for each person and their metadata such as location and employee ID number. The file can be opened in a spreadsheet tool such as Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets for viewing and analysis.
News Item Metrics
This report provides a list of all News items published over a date range with engagement metrics on each. Use this report to analyse which topics, categories, and authors produce the most engagement.
Editors can see metrics for all published News items, while Reporters can only see metrics for the ones they’ve published.
To download the report:
- Tap News in the main navigation
- Open the action menu (three-dot icon) in the top right corner
- From the dropdown menu, select Download News Item Metrics
- Select a date range
Each row in the CSV file represents a published News item. For each item, you’ll see its category, author, number of views, likes, comments, and more.
News Audience Metrics
This report shows engagement data for each individual over a selected date range. Use it to identify which people, departments, employee types, or locations are most engaged with News content.
To download the report:
- Tap News in the main navigation
- Open the action menu (three-dot icon) in the top right corner
- From the dropdown menu, select Download Audience Metrics
- Select a date range
Each row in this dataset represents an activated user—including those who didn’t view any News items during the selected period. For each person, you’ll see how many items they viewed, and how many likes and comments they added. The CSV file also includes metadata like location, employee ID, and the date they last logged into the platform.
News Platform Metrics
This report helps you track your publishing cadence and viewing trends over time. It also shows how many items are currently pinned—a number you’ll want to keep low (Learn why).
System Administrators can access these metrics by going to Administration Settings > Analytics > Download Platform Metrics. This exports a weekly breakdown of platform metrics, including the following News-specific items:
Parameter | Definition |
News Post Count | The number of News items published during the week. |
News Featured Active Total Count | Running total of items that have ever been featured. Subtract last week's value to find how many were featured this week. |
News Item Views Count | The total number of News item views in the week. Repeat views by the same person are not counted. |
News Items Viewed Count | Total number of News items viewed for the first time this week, regardless of when they were published. |
News Pinned Count | Number of News items pinned at the end of the week. |
Data for this report is finalized each week on Sunday at 10 PM Pacific Time for all customers.
