List Selector
The List Selector is used throughout the Jostle platform to target information or set permissions. It can be used to control the visibility of items throughout the platform.
With the List Selector, you can create a target audience made up of specific people, groups, or combinations of them. By using Intersections you can create targets that share attributes across one or more Filter Categories across the Locations, Org Units, and Custom Filters (often used as Employee Types).
Targeting information to exactly the right people brings several advantages:
- It reduces noise by only showing information to people it is relevant to.
- It prevents people from getting confused by information that is not relevant to them. For example, you can publish a new safety standard to just engineers in Canada, not confusing US-based engineers, who it does not apply to.
- New hires don't miss out. For example, if you have an evergreen Discussion on "Pricing Strategy" that is targeted at you Sales Org Unit, when a new salesperson is hired they'll see this without anyone needing to remember to add them.
- It allows you to expose confidential information on a need-to-know basis.

How List Selector works
When you open the List Selector, it will work according to the needs or where it is being used. Often when you open it, you will see it defaulted to Everyone. If you click on Everyone, you will then see options to create a Custom List or use a List Preset. In other places, it will be configured so you can only select individual Users, in which case it will not open to Everyone.
Notes:
- When you have a group added to the list, you can click Actions to convert this dynamic cluster into a list of the corresponding individual Users. When you do this, the dynamic nature of the group is no longer maintained.
- Groups are dynamic—if a person joins/leaves this Intersection they will gain/lose access to the content published to it.
Search-and-add
When you are creating a Custom List, or you are in a place where you must select individual Users, you will see a search entry bar at the top. Simply type in this field to search for specific Individuals, Teams, Locations, Custom Filter Categories (e.g. Employee Types), or Org Units. You can do this multiple times to create an additive list.
Intersections
When you are creating a Custom List and dynamic groups are permitted, there is an option to Add an Intersection. Intersections allow you to target people that match multiple Filter Categories. For example, you can create an Intersection that includes everyone who has Vancouver as a Location AND is in the Operations Org Unit.
Excluding External Contributors
While using the List Selector (except when in individual Users only mode) there is a Do Not Include External Contributors option near the bottom. Enabling this option will exclude any individuals that are tagged External User from the target, including those that are included by being part of a dynamic group.
List Presets
System Admins have the option to create List Presets that load the List Selector with a predefined target. These presets are managed in People and can be used when any author is setting the visibility for items across the platform.
Creating a new List Preset
To create a new List Preset, System Admins:
- Click on People in the Main Nav Panel
- Click the Action Menu (three dots) top right
- Select List Presets
- In the List Presets Panel, click the + top right corner to open the Add List Preset Panel (If this is the first time someone in your organization is using this feature, you may be prompted to click Create a List Preset before this step.)
- On the Add List Preset Panel, use the List Selector to create a Custom List of individuals and/or groups.
- Click Save at the top of the panel
Once created in this manner, this List Preset will be available for use across the platform when using the List Selector.
Managing and editing List Presets
On the List Presets Panel (People > Action Menu), System Admins can Edit, Delete, or Arrange any existing List Preset by clicking on the Action Menu (three dots) to the right of its name. Edit opens the List Selector so you can update the definition of this List Preset. Delete permanently removes this List Preset, but you can recreate it. Arrange allows you to choose where it shows in the dropdown list of List Presets, which appears via the List Selector when Authors are publishing content.
Note: Editing a List Preset does not affect the view permissions of any items previously published using it. List Presets simply preset the List Selector.
Using a List Preset
When you click on Custom List while using the List Selector, you will see all the List Presets. Clicking on any of them will load that preset into the List Selector. Once its loaded, you can continue to modify your target audience as you see fit, prior to publishing your content. Once published, the content is targeted to the Individuals and groups that were listed; it is not published to the Preset List itself.
