How to upload and download user photos in Jostle

In Admin Settings > User Accounts and Data > Upload/Download User Photos, System Admins can bulk upload/download all the organization's User Photos.

Note: System Admins can download a report to see which Users have pictures on their Profiles and which don't. Go Admin Settings > User Accounts and Data > Upload/Download User Photos and click on Download Photo Information.

General guidelines

Size & Shape

  • Crop your photos to a square, or ensure the face is centered if it's rectangular (we will crop it to a square, so the edges will be removed).
  • Aim for minimum dimensions of 315 x 315 pixels and a maximum of 1000 x 1000 pixels. Anything smaller will be enlarged and may look blurry. Anything bigger will have to be considerably downsized, which may result in a loss of image quality.
  • If your photo is larger than 1000px, and you don't have any image-editing software, you can resize it to custom dimensions using a free, online resizing tool, like this one from Adobe or https://www.photopea.com/ for more advanced editing options

Rotation

For JPG or TIFF images Jostle respects Exif image metadata. This is relevant in the case of image rotation. Some image tools, especially Microsoft products, do not respect Exif rotation metadata. This can result in images looking correct on your PC, but sideways or upside-down in Jostle. The following explain how an image can be rotated based on the Operative System:

  • For Windows users, the built in File Explorer works (right click, rotate left, rotate right)
  • For Mac users, the built-in Preview tool works
  • For Linux users, Pinta and GIMP work

Uploading photos

Single photo upload

A System Admin can upload a photo for any individual User by entering their User Profile and selecting Change Photo below their current picture, or via Admin Settings > User Accounts and Data > Edit, Re-invite, Disable Users > Search for the user > click Edit > click on Upload Photo > Save changes.

Bulk importing

To perform a bulk import of photos to Jostle, a System Admin will need to follow these steps:

  1. Assemble a .zip file that contains a separate image for each User Photo. The images can be in .jpg, .png or .gif format.
  2. To map the images to users, the file name for each image needs to be the User's Username.  (e.g. bob.smith@abc.com.jpg) or User's first name and last name separated by space (e.g. Bob Smith.jpg).

Tip: For a list of Usernames, go to Admin Settings > User Accounts and Data > Upload/Download User Photos and click Download Photo Information.
  3. Once the .zip file is ready, go to Admin Settings > User Accounts and Data > Upload/Download User Photos.
  4. Click Choose File under Upload Photos.
  5. Select the .zip file and click Upload.
  6. If there are any errors during import, you can download a spreadsheet stating which files had the error and what the error was.  Once those are corrected, upload the .zip file again.

Google Profile photo sync

If your Jostle platform is integrated with Google, user photos can be imported to Jostle automatically. Jostle only has access to a very low resolution version of the Google profile photo, so we only import photos to Jostle from Google if there is no existing profile photo. You can learn more about Google Workspace automation here.

Downloading photos

If users already have photos attached to their Profiles, System Admins can extract them all in one .zip file by clicking the Download all Photos button.

My photos are uploading blurry. Can someone tell me the resolution needed? They are professional headshots way over the minimum listed above.

    Hi Kelsey,

What you describe should "just work" so I'm not sure what the problem is. Could you please email us with further details at support@jostle.me and attach the file you are uploading so we can dig in and sort this together?

Was there ever a solution to this? I have employees who are having the same issue with hi-res photos.

Hello, I'm also having the same issue with professional, high-resolution photos showing up blurry and pixelated for profiles. Photos uploaded for news articles, etc. are fine.
