How to add events to your calendar in Jostle

Note: This feature is not available on the Jostle mobile app.

Add to calendar

Users can add any Event to their personal calendar by going to the Events view and clicking on the Event to open it in the viewer. Then, below the event details, click on Add to Calendar.

Then select one of the two available options (Download .ics or Add to Google Calendar).

1. Download .ics

When you click Add to Calendar > Download .ics, the browser will ask you what to do with the file. Using the dialog you should select Open With and then select the application you want (e.g. Outlook).

The selected application will then handle the remaining import steps.

What to do if that open .ics dialog does not appear

Your next steps will depend on which browser you are using...

Firefox

If the file is automatically opened in a specific calendar application it is because it has been configured that way. If you need to change this behavior, follow these instructions.

  1. Click the menu button and choose Options.
  2. Select the Applications Panel.
  3. The Applications panel will display. Select ICS File and change the action to Always Ask.
  4. Click OK to close the Options Window after making changes.

Chrome

If the dialog doesn’t appear, Chrome automatically downloads the file. In this case you have to select the application you want to open the file with after it has been downloaded. To do this:

  1. Right click on the file and select Open With.
  2. In the window, select the application you want.
  3. You can Select/Deselect the check box “Always use the selected program to open this kind of file”, if you want.

Safari

If the dialogue doesn’t appear, iOS Safari automatically downloads the file and, if it has been configured to open the file in a specific application, it is going to open the file. If you want to change that, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the file and select the gear icon.
  2. Select Open With.
  3. In the list, select the application you want.

Notes: 

  • Events notification emails will also come with the .ics attachment, allowing for the Event details to be downloaded and added to your calendar without having to open the details in the Events view.
  • It is important that you make sure you download the .ics attachment and not just click on it to open it, because in some browsers, that will add the Event as a new calendar, not as new entry on your existing calendar.
  • This can also be avoided by downloading the attachment and then using your calendar's import feature. For example, with Outlook, you would select  Open > Import/Export > Import an iCalendar (.ics) and after selecting the .ics file, you'll be given the option to Open as New or Import.  Select Import.

2. Add to Google calendar 

If you click this option, it will open your Google calendar. Edit the event in your Google calendar if you want to, then click Save.

    Is there a plan to have it sync with Google calendar in a future release?

    Julie,

    This is something we are looking into but it is complicated by the fact that Google Calendar is a web app not an installed program and there is much in that area we don't have access to for security reasons.

    Like Julie, I'd like a way to sync with Google Calendar (the download to desktop and import into Google Calendar takes too many steps).

    Since we use Google Authentication as our primary credentials, perhaps some of those security issues Bruce mentions may not be as much of an issue.

    Perhaps we can 'subscribe' to our own corporate Jostle calendar?

    Alternately, at some point, I'd like the iOS (or mobile) App to be able to add events to the phone's calendar as well...

    I guess there's like three feature requests here... but all around the same idea... get to sync, get away from download/upload.

    David,

    We agree that there is room for improvement here and I expect we will do it in small steps. The ability to get events into the mobile device calendars is very likely to appear when we do the next iteration of events for mobile (getting mobile functionality to match desktop). We also have some ideas to make adding to your calendar easier, with sync'ing being a bigger step n the future.

    Any Update on being able to sync a google calendar? We too use are google credentials for authentication.

    We recently did greatly improve the sync to your personal Google calendar. The process documented above was updated to reflect this. We do intend to keep this sync a manual event-by-event thing,

    And the ability to sync an Event to your mobile calendar is on deck for development.

    This thread is a great example of how Jostle really listens to their customer base. In fact, the 'Add to Google Calendar' integration in the Events module works better than any other integration I've used so far... not only did they make it happen, but they made it the absolute best experience.

    Not to negate the power of Jostle, but this thread was last updated in 2017.  It is now 2021 and there still does not appear to be a way to integrate/sync my firm's Google calendar with Jostle Events.  This currently a function I was easily able to accomplish with the MLB Season calendar and other calendars.

    It would be nice If I could just upload or import my firm's Google calendar into to Jostle so that It auto-populates events; so I don't have to record it in two places (especially since Jostle only allows inputting calendar events in one at a time).

    Fair comment Victor. We do appreciate the utility this would have, but from the design and implementation perspective its a big project. Right now we have two views in big project mode--News and Library. Hopefully Event's turn can be next.
